The Vocabulary Showed Up Before I Did
- FAU Cyber Club
- Networking
- Net+
On October 6th the FAU Cybersecurity Club went out to NCCI for a data center tour hosted by Wade Thomas. They walked us through the facility and explained how each piece of it supports what the business actually does day to day. It was a good day, and the part I keep thinking about is not any single thing we were shown.

Infrastructure attached to a business
What made it land was that nothing got presented in the abstract. It was not a list of equipment, it was this is here, this is what it does, and this is the part of our operation that stops working if it goes down.
That is a different thing from reading about redundancy in a study guide. In a book, redundancy is a definition you memorize. Standing in the building, it is a specific answer to a specific question somebody had to ask about this company's actual work. The reason you buy the second one of something is always a business reason, and you only really see that when someone who runs the place is the one explaining it.
Following along
The other thing that got me was that I could follow it.
A year ago a tour like this would have been a wall of noise. People saying words at each other while I nodded. This time the terminology was mostly stuff I had already been drilling for Network+, and I could track what was being described instead of waiting for the next sentence I recognized.
That is a strange feeling to describe to someone who has not had it. It is not the same as being an expert. I could not have run anything in that building. But there is a real difference between hearing a term and hearing a term you have a model for, and the gap between those two closed somewhere in the last few months without me noticing it happen.
It also reframed the studying. Cert prep is mostly a grind of acronyms and numbers that feel arbitrary while you are memorizing them. Then you stand in a room where people use those words without stopping to define them, and the grind turns out to have been the price of admission to the conversation. The material was not trivia. It was the vocabulary.
Why the club is worth the time
I have said before that joining the club made me realize how far behind I felt. Days like this are the other side of that. The club is how a tour like this happens at all, and it is the difference between studying for a cert in your bedroom and seeing the thing the cert is about.
Thanks to Wade Thomas for hosting us and to NCCI for opening the doors.
